ДЖЕЙМС ЛАСТДжеймс Ласт не имеет никакого отношения к Полю Мориа, но стили их музыки очень похожи. From an Italian circus family—her mother was a clown and her father an accordion virtuoso—Valente made her circus debut as a child. Her career as a multi-lingual vocalist began in 1953 when she joined the Kurt Edelhagen Band in Germany. Valente made her recording debut for Polydor the same year, enjoying international success with two songs by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona, "Malaguena" and "Andalucia." In its English translation, "The Breeze And I," the latter was a big hit in the UK and USA in 1955. Valente's cabaret act and her frequent recordings included material in six languages (French, German, Italian, English, Spanish and Swedish). During the early '60s, she recorded for Decca, and scored numerous European hits with such items as "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie," "Honolulu Strand Bikini," "Pepe" and "Quando, Quando, Quando." Her version of "La Golondrina" appeared in 1963 on ALL STAR FESTIVAL. It was one of the first charity albums, issued to raise money to aid refugees. Valente continued recording into the '70s, usually spicing up her collections of standards with recent hits. In the mid-'70s Valente married her musical director, the British jazz pianist Roy Budd, although they later divorced. CATERINA 86 was recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra. АСТРУД ГИЛЬБЕРТОb. 1940, Bahia, Brazil. Gilberto's career began by accident in March 1963 during a recording session featuring her husband, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and saxophonist Stan Getz. A projected track, "The Girl From Ipanema," required a singer conversant with English and although strictly a non-professional, Astrud was coaxed into performing the soft, sang-froid vocal. Her contribution was considered relatively unimportant—early pressings of the resultant STAN GETZ/JOAO GILBERTO did not credit the singer—even when the track was issued as a single the following year. "The Girl From Ipanema" eventually reached the US Top 5 and UK Top 20, garnering sales in excess of one million and forever binding the artist to the subject of the song. Astrud later toured with Getz; their collaboration was chronicled on GETZ AU GO GO, but she later pursued an independent career, bringing her distinctive, if limited, style to a variety of material, including standards, Brazilian samba/bossa nova and contemporary songs from Tim Hardin, Jimmy Webb and The Doors. Gilberto was the subject of renewed attention when "Ipanema" re-entered the UK charts in 1984 as a result of the UK bossa nova/jazz revival perpetrated by artists such as Everything But The Girl, The Style Council, Weekend and Sade. РИЧАРД КЛАЙДЕРМАНb. Philippe Pages, 1954, Paris, France. This highly popular pianist specializes in light classical compositions, with a romantic, yet low-profile image. His father was a piano teacher, and at the age of 12, Clayderman enrolled at the Conservatoire in Paris, and won the first prize four years later. He was encouraged to study classical piano, but his ambition was to be in a rock band. The dream was never realized, although in the '70s he did play with French pop stars such as Johnny Halliday and Michel Sardou. After working as a bank clerk, Clayderman was signed to the Delphine label, and had a hit in several European countries with "Ballade Pour Adeline," which sold several million copies. He followed up with albums which contained show tunes, film themes and familiar classical pieces, with his relaxed, low-key piano playing cushioned by a large string orchestra. In the early '80s he was reputed to be the top album-seller in France, and in other countries such as South Africa and Japan. In 1982 he broke into the UK market with the number 2 hit album RICHARD CLAYDERMAN and, the following year, with the television-promoted THE MUSIC OF RICHARD CLAYDERMAN. In the same year he played his first sell-out UK concerts and appeared several times on television. By the early '90s his publicity machine was claiming album sales totalling 60 million worldwide, and plans to play to audiences of 120,000 in Japan, Brazil and Australia, but some of his 1990 UK concerts were less well attended. One of his 1991 albums, TOGETHER AT LAST, in collaboration with James Last, contained recent hits by Bryan Adams and Elton John.
